Artist profile
From Louisiana oil painting to Art to AI.
Gerard Caulfield is a Louisiana oil painter drawn to moments charged with movement, memory and feeling. His subjects range from sacred art to the Saints, LSU, the New Orleans Hornets and baseball, but each work begins the same way: with close observation, a brush and oil on canvas. The six works on the opening page are all original, hand-painted oils.
An early chapter in his story took shape at St. Anthony Church in Lafitte, where Caulfield joined fellow parishioners in painting a new Stations of the Cross. He painted two of the stations. The Clarion Herald reported that the group “marveled at his natural talent”—a striking response to an artist whose formal training amounted to one art class in middle school and one year in high school.
Fellow artist Evelyn Hebert described what the group saw in his work: “Gerard’s paintings are so dynamic, especially when you get close and see the nails and the hammer.” The two Clarion Herald pages below preserve that parish project and the recognition it brought him.
That same instinct—to hold on to the drama inside a single moment—found its fullest expression during the New Orleans Saints’ 2009 championship season. Caulfield painted every victory, all sixteen of them, creating nineteen paintings in all. The series became Every Win, Painted: a season-long record made by hand, from the opening games through Super Bowl XLIV.
Years later, those finished paintings became the foundation for another idea. Caulfield developed and named Art to AI, his method of reimagining oil paintings through artificial intelligence. The process begins only after the physical painting is complete. Its composition, movement and point of view come from the original canvas; AI becomes a second visual interpretation rather than a substitute for the painting.
Seen together, the church paintings, the Saints collection and Art to AI form one continuous story. Caulfield’s innovation grows out of the same practice that first caught the attention of his fellow parishioners: making a scene feel immediate, then finding a new way for that feeling to carry forward.
